The park was originally named after a wild lilac bush that grew at its center but it had fallen into decline over time due to lack of care so it recently underwent restoration work which included removing invasive plants and installing new landscaping.

The St. Louis Park Lilac Park was restored after a major renovation project that included an upgrade to the parking lot, new playground equipment and splash pad, as well as a resurfaced tennis court.

The full restoration project included a complete overhaul of Lilac Way to include new trees, shrubs and ground coverings as well as redesigning all entrances to accommodate better safety for pedestrians crossing busy streets on their way to school or work.
