The Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum in St. Charles, Missouri is a great place to visit for anyone who loves Lewis and Clark history. The Lewis & Clark Boat House and Museum was built in 1847 by Lewis Dennison, an early settler of the area, as a boat house for his family’s steamboat business on the Missouri River. It later became home to Lewis’ son-in-law David Clarkson and his descendants until it was purchased by the City of St. Charles in 1966 with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) . Lewis & Clark was the Lewis and the Clark expedition that took place between 1804-1806 to explore what lay beyond the Rocky Mountains. Lewis, William Clark (Clark’s younger brother), Sacagawea (a Shoshone woman who acted as an interpreter for Lewis), York (an African American slave belonging to William Clark) and their dog Seaman set out on this journey with only one goal: to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean, which they did! The museum features many artifacts from these explorers’ travels.
