Pikes Peak is known for its rocky summit and steep face. Pikes Peak is named after American geologist Zebulon Montgomery Pike who was the first European to reach the summit on August 19, 1806. Pikes peak has been a popular tourist destination since it opened to visitors in 1887. Visitors can drive up Pikes Peak by taking State Highway 24 from Cripple Creek or take a train up Pike’s peak from Manitou Springs.
